Sappada
(Belluno) was home 3rd-4th February 2001 to the 31th National Marble
Skiing Championships, the traditional Winter meeting for
entrepreneurs in the natural stone industry organised by
L'Informatore del Marmista in collaboration with Marmor Ski Club.
The event, unique of its kind, brings together entrepreneurs and
employees in the natural stone industry in a festive sporting
atmosphere.
The cross-country race on Saturday 3rd February in the Sappada
stadium opened the 31st edition of the Championship, which every
year attracts well-trained and enthusiastic athletes. Participants
and supporters passed an enjoyable evening together in a typical
Sappada setting. Sunshine and superb snow on Sunday 4h February
greeted the giant slalom event.
Thanks to the work of the ski instructors of New Sappada Co., the
event went off in the best possible manner. The award ceremony was
attended by F.I.S.I. Federation Councillor Pierangelo Albertini was
equally an occasion to recall Giorgio Zusi, who first conceived the
event.
Numerous trophies, cups and prizes were presented to all
partecipants, who also received the traditional medal coined
specifically for the Championships.

A striking low relief in Carrara white marble depicting a "snow
star" carved during the days of the event at Sappada by sculptor
Frans Ferzini was awarded to Marco Zonato for his father Tomaso, who
kept in touch with award ceremony by telphone, being unable to take
part as usual in the competition.
Our thanks to all competitors and companies whose active involvement
once again ensured the success of the Championships [...]
